VOCALE
A Tool for the Automatic annotation of vocalic and consonantal intervals
The Vocale algorithm consists of several parts. Its main component is the calculation of relative entropy for each column of the spectrogram, which
makes the main distinction between vowels and consonants. The measurements of total energy, relative energy of certain bands, length and Euclidian distance complement this.
In detail, Vocale uses the following classifiers:
- pauses: low total energy and minimal length of 30ms
- vowels: low relative entropy between 0 - 1000 Hz, high energy between 0 - 5000 Hz, minimal length of 16ms
- consonants: high relative entropy between 0 - 1000 Hz, minimal length of 8ms
- additional classifiers for specific types of consonants
- nasals: low relative entropy and very low energy above 1000 Hz
- voiceless fricatives: low energy between 0 - 1000 Hz
